brief description:
volkswagen foundation’s 2022 fellowship applications are now open. the volkswagen-funded “sensitive source” project investigates the source of human remains from colonial (primary) contexts in two groups at the university of göttingen. this project aims to investigate the origin of human remains and the conditions for their acquisition and transfer to academic groups. moreover, their use of research and teaching as well as their contemporary social and political meanings. in addition to research, the project establishes contacts with representatives of the areas from which these human remains originate, discusses their future treatment and begins restitution.
the project focuses on human remains from oceania and africa. the sensitive assets project is multidisciplinary and combines different systematic approaches from critical historical source research, cultural anthropology, and biological anthropology. it welcomes inquiries and applications from potential colleagues in these and related areas.

grantees will receive a monthly salary of €2,100. pending individual circumstances, alternative allowance, family allowance and childcare can also be provided.

travel costs to and from göttingen will be covered. during the research period in göttingen, scholarship recipients will receive support on various organizational and content issues.

pending the state of the epidemic and travel restrictions, each visiting colleague will be invited to stay for three months in göttingen in the second half of 2022 (specific negotiable dates).

the visiting fellow will be associated with researchers and experts in the following areas, depending on the needs and characteristics of their proposed project. history, cultural anthropology/ethology, biological anthropology, source research, organizational practice, museum practice, and exhibition organization. or, more specifically with the seminar on medieval and modern history, the institute of cultural anthropology/european anthropology, historical anthropology and the human environment, anatomy center, group development center, or the newly established physsen forum
eligibility criteria
we are seeking six short-term fellowships, each lasting two to three months, for junior researchers from africa and oceania who wish to participate in our project. we are open to all kinds of small businesses that propose new perspectives, expand or challenge what we do. subject matter, questions, research methods, and the interests of colleagues are deliberately kept open in order to facilitate broad views on collections of human remains, their colonial history, contemporary meanings and treatment. inquiries from the areas of history, archives, museum studies, social and cultural anthropology, biological anthropology, indigenous studies and related areas are welcomed. we also call for proposals for technical research and interventions that critically deal with the main themes of the project.
