animal behaviour, ecology and environmental sciences, including a focus on the tropics; Anthropology, including archaeology, cultural anthropology, linguistics, and physical anthropology; astrophysics and astronomy; earth sciences and paleobiology; evolutionary and systematic biology; popular life. History of science and technology. art history, especially American, contemporary, African, and Asian art, American crafts in the twentieth century, and decorative arts; Materials Research Molecular Biology; Social and cultural history of the United States.
Smithsonian Institution Fellowship Scholarship
Postdoctoral*: A stipend of $55,000 per year and a research allowance of up to $5,000
* Higher Earth and Planetary Sciences and Postdocs – stipends up to $60,000 per year and research allowance of up to $5,000
Pre-doctoral: A stipend of $42,000 per year and a research allowance of up to $5,000
Ten-week graduate student: $8000 stipend

Eligibility Requirements for a Smithsonian Institution Fellowship
Determining the category of fellowship to be applied for should be based on the expected academic level at the time the fellowship will commence:
- Senior Fellowships – Applicants must have a Ph.D. or equivalent for at least 7 years. Applicants who have obtained a Ph.D. or its equivalent before November 1, 2014 are eligible to apply for the Graduate Fellowships. *
Postdoctoral fellowships – for researchers up to seven years postdoctoral. * - Pre-doctoral fellowships – for doctoral candidates to conduct dissertation research. Students registered at a university as PhD candidates. or equivalent eligible pre-doctoral fellowships. By the time the appointment begins, the university must agree to conduct thesis research at the Smithsonian Institution and certify that the requirements for the Ph.D., other than thesis, have been met.
Ten-Week Postgraduate Fellowships – for postgraduate students to conduct independent research, usually before applying for a candidacy if at a Ph.D. a program. When applying, students must be officially enrolled in a graduate program of study at a degree-granting institution and must have completed at least one full-time semester or equivalent.
