how to apply for estonian e-residence

• in order to join the e-residence program in estonia and to become an electronic resident, you must take the following steps to access the application online:

• • you can apply for e-residence in estonia online, by filling out the official application form, which is available through this link.

  • enter the required basic cv information, which includes your name, address and local id number (if any).

• • enter information about the work you started or will start; download your cv, and make sure you have any ban on business or project activities.

• • in addition to your cv and business information, you’ll have to submit a so-called “motivation statement.” you will be asked to describe the main reason why you are seeking e-residence in estonia. this can be in the form of a small paragraph through which you review your underlying motivation to submit. typical key motivations, for example, are “bringing business to estonia”, “admiring the idea of e-residence” or “international businesses that are not associated with a place”.

• • submit/upload all required documents (listed below). once you submit your application, it will be reviewed by the government, and your personal data will be verified in keeping with european security databases by estonian police and border guards. (please note that your application is likely to be rejected if you have serious criminal records.)

• • while you wait for your application to be processed, you will likely receive brief emails from estonian police and border guards to let you know the different stages through which your application is going through.

• • if you pass an efficient and effective background check, you will be notified of your admission to the estonia e-residence program, pending receipt of your “e-residence kit”, which you must receive in person from the receiving point you specified in your application. you will coordinate via email to schedule a collection receipt (you cannot simply come to the embassy or consulate to receive it without a prior appointment).

• • you should be aware of the need for applicants to receive their own set of materials in person (applicants are not currently allowed to assign someone else to receive the e-residence group on their behalf). the collection can only be received by the person whose name is registered in the e-residence application in estonia.

• • when you receive your collection in person, you will be asked to submit your biometric data (fingerprints). in addition, when you receive your collection, you will be asked to provide the same id card you used to prove your identity during your application. failure to provide the same identity (even if you provide another valid proof of identity) will result in you refusing to hand over the collection.

• • please keep in mind that once you send your electronic accommodation kit to the receiving point, you will have 6 months to receive it before it expires and the government will actually destroy it. if you fail to get your collection within the permitted time, you must start applying for electronic accommodation again. (please note that due to the current disruption in travel due to the cov pandemic, you may be allowed to receive your collection after the traditional six-month period without being destroyed.)

  • payment method (credit card: mastercard/visa).

  • passport data/travel document.
